Quarantine protocol
The information below is from the SSU Health Team and the College of Arts and Sciences Dean. If you have any questions regarding COVID or Quarantine protocols, you may email covid19@shawnee.edu.
Note that none of the classrooms in the Vern Riffe Center is considered a lecture hall.
I will keep this page updated should changes to the quarantine protocol come to me. Additional information is available on the SSU Health page.
Updated quarantine scripts:
Effectively immediately, if someone tests positive after attending a class that DOESN’T meet in a lecture hall (this is all classes in the VRCFA), all unvaccinated individuals in that class (unvaccinated instructors included) must quarantine, even if all parties were wearing KN95 masks during exposure.
Quarantine times will vary, but 5 days is the minimum. Students who are following the process should always be able to produce an absence verification to show their instructors they are legitimately in hard quarantine (regardless of the quarantine length).
If the above situation occurs, the instructor of record will receive an Action Alert from the Health Team (see script below).
After sharing the Action Alert with students, an instructor may privately check each student’s Health Pass to ensure that those present are permitted to attend.
If someone tests positive after attending a class that meets in a lecture hall, the Health Team will send a Precautionary Alert to the instructor of record (see script below).
Faculty who are uncertain whether their classrooms are considered lecture halls should reach out to their respective academic dean for clarification.
Additional guidance:
Instructors who would like a supply of KN95 masks to distribute to their students should submit a request to covid19@shawnee.edu. Please allow the Health Team enough lead time to complete the request.
Instructors may require students in their classes to wear KN95 masks, but should not make the requirement until after securing a full supply of masks. Please be advised that university-approved accommodations will still apply.
If a student shares they have tested positive on a home test, please report it to covid19@shawnee.edu, even if the student says they plan to do so.
Example action alerts that you may receive from the SSU health team:
ACTION ALERT:
(Email sent to a Professor regarding a student testing positive after attending class not in a lecture hall.)
The Health Team has identified a person who recently attended your course [identify course # and section] that is now COVID-19 positive. You are encouraged to use the following script to communicate the information to your class. Although you may know or suspect the identity of the person who is COVID-19 positive, you are not permitted to share that information with others.
Announcement to class:
Students,
A student who attended a recent class has tested positive for COVID-19. Each person present on [date] who is not fully vaccinated is required to report their exposure to the SSU Health Team thru the SSU App or at covid19@shawnee.edu and begin quarantine immediately. Until Feb. 1st, 2022 fully-vaccinated is defined as having received two doses of Moderna/Pfizer or one dose of J&J at least two weeks ago. Vaccinated persons present on the specified date may wish to wear a KN95 mask or higher for 10 days from the specified date. KN95 masks are available from Hatcher Hall and DPS. Anyone experiencing symptoms is expected to complete a PCR test, isolate immediately, and notify the Health Team. Monitor your health daily. If you have health concerns, visit the SSU Health Clinic or contact your healthcare provider.
PRECAUTIONARY ALERT:

Announcement to class:
Students,
A student who attended one of our recent classes is presumed positive or has tested positive for COVID-19. Because we have been wearing masks and distancing as much as possible, risk of transmission is reduced. Exposed individuals can expect to be contacted individually. As a precaution, everyone should monitor their health daily. Anyone experiencing symptoms is expected to complete a PCR test, isolate immediately, and notify the Health Team. If you have health concerns, visit the SSU Health Clinic or contact your healthcare provider.
