Advising and registration
Students need to complete and submit a check sheet to your advisor prior to advising. Your academic advisor will use this information to recommend classes for the next semester.
Note: Always include your student ID number when communicating with advisors or the department chair.
Quick start:
- Step 1: Download the check sheet for your major and get your transcripts.
- Step 2: Complete the check sheet with information from your transcripts.
- Step 3: Email the completed check sheet to your faculty advisor.
Later:
- Follow the instructions to register for your classes via mySSU.
Instructions for students
The check sheets will help your advisor to get recommended courses to you as quickly as possible. If you have questions, or need assistance filling out the document, contact your advisor with your ID and available times and they can schedule a time to meet with you.
Note: Course recommendations will be based upon your accurate and complete information provided on the check sheet. The transcripts remain the final sourse of truth for completed courses.
Step 1: Getting your documents
Download the check sheet for your major.
Save the file with your ID and last name as the filename. Example:
8675309 - smith.txt
Access your Unofficial Transcripts via mySSU. This transcript is a list of the courses you have taken, the semester they were taken, and the grade you received.
If you are unable to access your transcripts, please contact the Student Business Center or the department secretary to obtain a copy. Be certain to use your school email and include your student ID number.
- Student Business Center: (740) 351-3205 or sbc@shawnee.edu
- Brianna Mullen-Hayes, department secretary: bmullenhayes@shawnee.edu
Continue to the next steps below.
Step 2: Completing the check sheet
Open the check sheet in a text editor (examples: Textedit on Mac or Notepad on Windows).
Place an X in the brackets for courses you have completed or have in progress.
Reference information from your transcripts for accuracy.
Replace XX00 with the semester and year of a course completed or in progress. Examples:
FA22
= Fall 2022
SP22
= Spring 2022
SM22
= Summer 2022
TC
= Transfer Credit.Add any relevant notes.
After marking all courses, save the TXT file. Remember, it should be saved with your ID and name in the filename.
Examples of notes:
If you received less than a C- in an art course, you need to retake the course if it is a pre-requisite for another course. Please indicate this grade after or below the title of the class.
If you might need a course substitution, mark that after or below the name of the class.
You can add additional comments at the beginning of the document or inline at the area that is most relevant.
Continue to the next steps below.
Step 3: Contacting your advisor
Email your academic advisor using your school email address.
Include in the email:
- The completed TXT check sheet from the steps above
- Your student ID number
- Your name
- Information that might be unique or relevant for your courses
- The subject line “Registration Advising” and your ID number. Example:
Registration Advising - 8675309
Continue to the next steps below.
Wrapping up
Your advisor will use your completed check sheet to recommend courses for your next term. Please be as accurate as possible.
Do expect some delay as advisors work through their advisee lists.
If you have questions, contact your advisor.
If you are told that you need to do a course substitution, the information for that form is here.
Thank you for your help and cooperation as we transition to new advising software.
